More than 30 prominent Canadian musicians have publicly endorsed the Pact for a Green New Deal. In addition to the 60 organizations, unions, and associations that have joined forces to launch the Pact for a Green New Deal, the list of influential musicians who have endorsed the envisioned ambitous overall of the economy includes Neil Young, Broken Social Scene, k.d. lang, Grimes, Dan Mangan, Richard Reed Perry of Arcade Fire, Rufus Wainwright, and more.
Inspired by the stimulus program proposed by a group of Democratic Party politicians and activists in the United States, the Pact for a Green New Deal demands that all Canadian political parties commit to cutting emissions in half by 2030, as well as “protect critical cultural and biological diversity, create a million jobs, and address the multiple crises we face through a holistic and far reaching plan that respects the constitutionally enshrined and internationally recognized rights of Indigenous peoples.” The organizers also say that “this large, non-partisan coalition calls on all federal political parties, in the lead up to the election, to put versions of the Green New Deal that meet those goals in their platforms.”
A recent poll conducted by Abacus Data shows that 61 per cent of Canadians support the idea of a Green New Deal.
"Canada and humanity at large are facing an uncertain future," said Dan Mangan said in a statement. "As a parent to two young kids, I refuse to leverage their potential to lead fulfilling and safe adult lives for short term stability in the marketplace now. Not only is a Green New Deal that invests in green jobs, clean energy, and equal opportunity for everyone our best shot at fostering a liveable planet, but it's the most sound economic investment we could possibly make."
