Music Industry & Artists Descend on CMW 2018

The 36th annual edition of Canadian Music Week returned to downtown Toronto from May 7-13, 2018 as hundreds of showcases featuring artists from around the world were held in 40 venues around the city. As well, the CMW Music Summit, which was expanded to four days from May 9-12, brought together Canadian and international industry players to do business and for educational sessions covering a wealth of timely topics affecting music in 2018.The expanded music conference was held at the Sheraton Centre Hotel. Among the wide-ranging music industry topics on the schedule were streaming revenues, blockchain’s uses and potential in the music industry, the future of VR/AR content, the power of streaming playlists, as well as spotlights on the USA and other countries. Among the speakers were MAC Presents President Marcie Allen, Lava Records’ Jason Flom, AEG Presents’ Rick Mueller, immigration lawyer Lorraine D’Alessio, Beasley Media Group CEO Caroline Beasley, Nathan Wiszniak of Spotify Canada, and many more executives and representatives from all areas of the industry.

For the first time, CMW hosted a music hackathon, which which saw the diverse team named its lead member, Sate, win the competition for its concept for an augmented reality application for concerts.

This year’s festival headliners included Sloan, The Beaches, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Slow, 2 Chainz, Monster Truck, Brian Jonestown Massacre, and more.*Canadian Musician* had a huge presence at Canadian Music Week 2018, thanks in large part to Samantha Everts-Matusoff and Mark Matusoff.
