JUNO Award-winning artist Dan Mangan and music industry entrepreneur Laura Simpson have announced the official launch of their new venture, Side Door, which brings artists and fans together to book concerts in everyday spaces.
According to Mangan and Simpson, the online platform empowers communities and individuals to support and celebrate creativity by bringing live performances into everyday spaces. Helping to create memorable shows in living rooms, backyards, coffee shops, community halls, studio spaces, etc., Side Door matches hosts with performers, builds direct connections, and simplifies the booking process with easy and transparent digital tools.
Many notable names in Canadian music like Broken Social Scene, John K Samson, Rural Alberta Advantage, Alan Cross, and Hey Rosetta’s Tim Baker have already booked shows through Side Door. But the platform is not just for music shows, but can be used by artists and their fans of all types, including theatre, stand-up comedy, and even academic lectures.
Co-founded Mangan and Simpson in April 2017, and developed in consultation with hundreds of hosts and performers, Side Door has already completed over 150 events in its beta phase.
"We’re building a friendly, efficient, and transparent marketplace where performers of any kind can make a living, even if they don’t have the gatekeepers of the industry on their side," says Mangan. "These kinds of intimate shows create deep, long-lasting, supportive relationships with audiences while putting more money in artists’ pockets. It’s a win for everybody."
