We're excited to share the latest video from Toronto dancehall/hip-hop innovator Lexxicon in our latest #CMPremiere. The powerful vid is for the track "Lonely" from his heralded new album, Bashment Trap House, which dropped January 31st, 2020.
"Lonely" is one of the more personal tracks on the record, reflecting on Lexxicon’s experience being diagnosed and living with Crohn’s disease. It has become a means for him to create a space for more awareness, advocating for support around the disease.
"The concept for this video was to showcase my head space when I was inspired to write this song," Lexxicon tells Canadian Musician. "I spoke with Nika [Zbasnik, director] about some ideas and she added hers and we were able to create this visual representative of sadness and the inner battle that I was facing. Overall, I think we were really able to bring the song to life in a new way and I really hope people can connect with it. I wouldn't have been able to do this without my team and great friends who were able to be extras for one of the scenes and I'm really proud of what we did together."
Lexxicon's output fluctuates between dancehall Patois, R&B harmonies, and melodic rapping with pure power. Born in Jamaica, he moved to Birmingham, England and then New York City before settling in Toronto, where he found the drive, passion, and tools to become a recording artist. He honed his craft by growing in some of the city’s talent incubators, such as R.I.S.E Edutainment and UrbanArts – B.M.M., and went on to earn coveted slots at events like Afro Fest, Kothu Fest, Canadian Music Week, T-Dot Fest, and the Culture Shock Block Party on the back of his powerful, high-energy live show.
